The bronze depiction of the ancient king Philip II, the father of Alexander the Great, dominates the eponymous square, although its official name is just “Warrior”.
The 13-metre-tall statue stands on a 15-metre-tall platform with additional sculptures of soldiers and lions placed in a fountain encased in bronze and marble reliefs.
The author of “The Warrior” and all the other statues and reliefs in the complex of monuments in front of the St. Demetrus church at the entrance to the Old Skopje Bazaar is Valentina Stevanovska. She worked on the plaster models for two years. The models were then cast in bronze in the Guastini artistic foundry in Italy.
Stevanovska waived the production fee for Philip II, which in addition to the depiction of Alexander, officially named “Equestrian Warrior”, in Skopje’s main “Macedonia” square, became one of the symbols of the “Skopje 2014” project.
