A monument to an Ottoman-era hero, “Vasil Cakalarov” was placed on the ring road near the Catholic Church in Skopje in the early morning of April 8, 2013.

The five-metre-high monument, cast in bronze with a downward-pointing gun, spurred controversy not only because it was erected overnight, hours after former mayor Vladimir Todorovik lost the local elections in 2013 in Centar Municipality, but also because of the atypical, and for some also aesthetically unsound, model chosen by the authors, Darko and Elena Dukovski.
