The monument to Alexander the Great, officially named “Equestrian Warrior”, is the flagship project of the entire “Skopje 2014” endeavour.

The colossal memorial made of bronze and marble accompanied by fountains and other sculptures was erected in very centre of the city, on the Macedonia Square. Its cost, aesthetics and socio-political implications are almost essential to all analyses and reactions to the “Skopje 2014” project.

The Council of Centar Municipality passed the first decision to publish a resolution to begin the procedure to erect a monument to Alexander the Great in 2006, when Violeta Alarova was the mayor. The author of the “Equestrian Warrior” is Valentina Stevanovska, until then a relatively unknown sculptor.
