The five-metre-tall monuments of the two iconic revolutionaries Goce Delcev and Dame Gruev on horseback, located on each side of the Stone Bridge access from Macedonia Square, were unveiled in May 2010.
These statues were amongst the first ones cast in the Ferdindo Marinelli foundry in Florence. They were transported to the square in trucks with security at approximately 3am, without prior announcement. Following adverse reactions in the media and from the opposition, the ruling VMRO-DPMNE party announced that their erection was “an occasion to build national unity”.
